Job Summary:

The Marist / Health Quest School of Medicine (“SOMed”) seeks an Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs to join its leadership team in a period of exciting development and expansion. The SOMed will be a nationally recognized leader in technology-enabled medical education, discovery, and care delivery transformation. Reporting to the SOMed Dean/Chief Academic Officer (“Dean/CAO”), the Associate Dean of Faculty and Academic Affairs will work with SOMed Assistant Deans and Clinical Chairs to recruit and retain faculty, and oversee faculty’s development and mentoring.

The successful candidate will assume a role in the development and ongoing improvement of a highly integrated, cross-disciplinary, clinical presentation and inquiry-based medical school curriculum that includes technology-enabled Case-Based and Team-Based Learning. Reporting to the Associate Dean are Assistant Deans, Clinical Chairs and Directors responsible for the day-to-day implementation of medical education, medical simulation, and faculty affairs and development. The position also includes the expectation of teaching and scholarship in the individual’s area of expertise.

As a member of the leadership team for a new school of medicine, the Associate Dean will additionally collaborate with the Dean/CAO, administration, faculty and students to define and implement the overall mission and academic policies and goals of the SOMed during the preliminary-to-full-accreditation period, and will be responsible for meeting relevant accreditation and licensure standards as needed thereafter. We seek a visionary, innovative and dynamic leader who will both maximize our academic potential for the greater good of the entire community and help us to define a unique academic model that will draw on advances in artificial intelligence, augmented and virtual reality, and other emerging information technologies.


Doctoral degree (MD, PhD or equivalent) required.  Minimum of five (5) years’ academic administration experience or other significant academic medicine leadership experience.  Teaching experience at both the undergraduate and graduate levels

  • Demonstrated ability to lead the development and implementation of a mission-centered, technology-enabled, innovative curricula
  • Proven track record in recruiting, retaining, developing and mentoring a diverse faculty
  • Demonstrated understanding of leading-practice medical education policies as they relate to LCME and regional accreditation standards
  • Experience with innovative, evidence-based, and technologically rich teaching strategies, including a proven track record of success in developing and implementing pedagogical approaches such as case-based, problem-based and team-based learning
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate interactive learning in large and small group settings
  • Demonstrated ability to assess, develop and utilize online systems for management of faculty affairs
  • Should possess an entrepreneurial and proactive spirit with a comfort level in a start-up environment
  • Outstanding diplomatic skills and demonstrated commitment to fairness and transparency
  • High-level verbal and written skills with an ability to communicate effectively at all levels throughout an organization, including with board members, executives, faculty, and staff

Primary Responsibilities:

  1. Collaborate with – and provide strategic leadership for –Assistant Deans, Clinical Chairs, faculty, and staff to develop, implement and evaluate an innovative curriculum
  2. Lead development of innovative programs to recruit and retain faculty in their various academic roles and to promote the resilience, vitality, professional accomplishment and personal satisfaction of a diverse faculty workforce
  3. Cultivate and mentor faculty by leading the development, implementation, evaluation, and refinement of evidence-based and innovative programs, services, and resources that enhance professional development throughout their careers
  4. In support of accreditation efforts, develop, review and oversee implementation of SOMed academic policies in collaboration with the Dean/CAO, faculty, and other constituents
  5. Collaborating with communications and public relations, promote faculty and staff within and outside the SOMed
  6. Teach in the academic program
  7. Participate in governance activities at the SOMed, Marist College, and Health System levels
  8. Other duties and projects as assigned

The School of Medicine will also partner with leading life science and technology organizations to help educate, attract and retain diverse professionals to serve the healthcare needs of the Hudson Valley, all while enhancing the reputations of Marist and Health Quest as leaders in the fields of education and healthcare. The School of Medicine will seek faculty committed to cutting-edge healthcare education and to pursuing applied research initiatives. The collaborative environment of the school will provide inter-professional experiences between future physicians and other professionals – both from within and beyond the healthcare field. Finally, by offering students meaningful opportunities to serve the community and by fostering the principles of life-long learning, innovation and continuous improvement, the school will instill a patient-centric focus and prepare students for multi-care environments. The School of Medicine will seek approvals from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the New York State Education Department and Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Once fully staffed and accredited (by July 2021), the School of Medicine is expected to begin actively recruiting students, with the first class of 60 matriculating in July 2022. By 2028, that class size projects to increase to 120.
