Job Summary:

The Marist / Health Quest School of Medicine (“SOMed”) an Associate Dean / Chief Diversity Officer to join its team in a period of exciting development and expansion.  Reporting to the SOMed Dean/ Chief Academic Officer’s (“Dean/CAO”) office, the Associate Dean / Chief Diversity Officer will work with senior leadership to lead strategic diversity and inclusion efforts within the School of Medicine.

The Associate Dean / Chief Diversity Officer will serve as the SOMed’s lead on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) matters and will make recommendations on DEI programs that impact the SOMed community and that support the diversity goals established in the SOMed’s Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) accreditation documents. The successful candidate will lead and coordinate diversity planning, including identifying and creating new initiatives which foster a welcoming, inclusive environment for all of its students, faculty, and staff.

The Associate Dean / Chief Diversity Officer will possess a broad and contemporary understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion issues, laws, and regulations and how those translate into best practices and policies in the fields of medical education and healthcare.

Qualifications:

Eight (8) or more years of relevant experience working in diversity-related positions, preferably in a higher education and/or healthcare environment.

At least a Master’s degree is required. Terminal degree is preferred.

Experience:

  • Proven track record of creating and administering DEI policies, initiatives, and training with a strong knowledge of contemporary discourses, issues, pedagogical practices, curricular development, fundraising practices and principles, research methods, student development theory and practice, survey development and best practices for DEI.
  • Should possess an entrepreneurial and proactive spirit with a comfort level in a start-up environment
  • Outstanding diplomatic skills and demonstrated commitment to fairness and transparency
  • High-level verbal and written skills with an ability to communicate effectively at all levels throughout the two organizations, including board members, executives, faculty, and staff members
  • Intellectual curiosity coupled with an interest in science and medicine in addition to demonstrated knowledge of human resources functions
  • Proven success in recruiting and training a diverse pool of faculty, students, and staff and building an inclusive, professional environment
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of federal, state, and local legislation related to anti-discrimination, including the Equal Employment Opportunity Act of 1972 and Title IX of the Educational Amendments Act of 1972

Primary Responsibilities

  1. Collaborate with key constituents in academic and administrative departments of the School of Medicine and, as appropriate, Marist College to create diversity recruitment and retention plans for faculty, administrators, and students for the School of Medicine, and, as appropriate, other College departments;
  2. Develop and lead the implementation of a strategic plan, building and fostering diversity and inclusion
  3. Collaborate with Marist College and the School of Medicine Human Resources, Student Affairs, and Academic Affairs to develop and deliver educational workshops and training programs on diversity and inclusion
  4. Develop and cultivate community partnerships with community stakeholders supporting diversity and inclusion
  5. Conduct ongoing assessment of diversity and inclusion initiatives, including delivering periodic reviews and findings to senior leadership
  6. Act as the primary liaison for diversity and inclusion initiatives specific to the School of Medicine.
  7. Other duties as assigned.

The Marist/Health Quest School of Medicine aspires to become a nationally recognized leader in technology-enabled medical education, discovery and care delivery. By providing transformative physician education for patient-centered care, it will prepare students for the advanced healthcare environment of the future. The School of Medicine will also partner with leading life science and technology organizations to help educate, attract and retain diverse professionals to serve the healthcare needs of the Hudson Valley, all while enhancing the reputations of Marist and Health Quest as leaders in the fields of education and healthcare. The School of Medicine will seek faculty committed to cutting-edge healthcare education and to pursuing applied research initiatives. The collaborative environment of the school will provide inter-professional experiences between future physicians and other professionals – both from within and beyond the healthcare field. Finally, by offering students meaningful opportunities to serve the community and by fostering the principles of life-long learning, innovation and continuous improvement, the school will instill a patient-centric focus and prepare students for multi-care environments. The School of Medicine will seek approvals from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), the New York State Education Department and Middle States Commission on Higher Education. Once fully staffed and accredited (by July 2021), the School of Medicine is expected to begin actively recruiting students, with the first class of 60 matriculating in July 2022. By 2028, that class size projects to increase to 120.
